flit’s back to school countdown – 6 days

So … had tons of stuff I wanted to get done this week and so far it is just NOT HAPPENING.

A whole lot of stress & aggravation yesterday – I did start making progress on my psych essay … but only just. Then Ross got home and the day just rolled downhill quickly from there. Tons of kidShit I could without… but we will get it sorted.  Somehow or other.

Decided to quit stressing so much about the reading – anything that doesn’t get read this week, I can read after my training sessions etc next week. It will be my first week of staying in a motel without Ross … should be able to get some of it done.  The psychology paper and my sanity need to come first.

Got offered a course to teach this coming semester at Georgian, but they had already scheduled it in for Tuesdays and weren’t willing to change it to Thursday to suit my schedule. I am almost relieved – I think I will have quite enough to keep me busy this semester, really. And the money wouldn’t even really be good enough to make it worthwhile either – when you teach 3 or more courses you are paid well…just one, I usually get about half of my hourly rate & no benefits. I would have done it – but I’m more than okay with not doing it, too.

I could have should have made progress on my paper today – but this is what I decided to do instead:

Grandma Lee & Colton out on Georgian Bay.

Grandma & Hunter came too. Grandma rowed.

Of course Lady came too.

Yay for ice cream sandwiches!

Some things are just more important than stressing about kids and school.

Changes are coming to Gather

…. and the remainder of the title of that particular article is  – Changes You Asked For

Wanna bet?

I’m pretty sure that I was pretty clear about the Changes I Asked For - and these ain’t them. From the article I linked there:

Keep your Twister game – and/or your Beachball – for new and not yet signed in members. But could we please, please, please, have a real home page back? Pretty please?

And how about on your Explore pages – Posts, Photos & Videos – just add a By My Connections option…. we’ve got Most Viewed, Most Discussed, Highest Rated & Recent – would it kill you to add For Me in there? We know you have the technology.

Come on – what would it hurt? Why are you so intent on forcing us to either go through the feed – which many of us DETEST and which DOES NOT WORK properly – or wade through every post by everybody whether we’re connected to them or not?

Connections are the most important thing on Gather – why, why, why have you decided to undermine the single most important thing that makes Gather special? It makes no sense! Seriously. Come on … please? With sprinkles and a cherry on top?

Not one of these things appears to be in the supposed fix.

I was invited, and accepted the invitation to attend the Preview tomorrow afternoon – but I have already emailed my ~regrets~ …. I can already tell by the screenshots that Pam posted that they are not going to fix the things that drive me nuts about Gather since Hawthorne.

If I want to be frustrated, I can talk to my kids or my husband. If I want to be fed garbage, I can go to McDonalds. If I want to be ignored, I can go to Wal-Mart.  And if I want to be read, I can write here, or on Today.com, or on countless other sites.

The only possible reason to EVER show up at Gather any more is to stay in touch with collaboration central members & maybe a (very) few others.

I understand that some people don’t/won’t care enough to bother to visit me elsewhere or to keep in touch by email …  I’ll survive. Might be sad… but it won’t kill me.

flitting on blogging (cross posted from Gather)

It’s Wednesday, my least favourite day of the week, cuz that’s the day the beer truck comes. My back hurts already and I’m not even there yet! Don’t know how much help I’ll be, but I will go anyway. Have to go to the bank and get money too…trying to get motivated to do that, but so far…

And today, also, Mr. P is bring in not one but two messed up computers for me to fix. He called last night and said “do you want 2 computers to fix?”  I said no…but he is bringing them anyway. Some people just don’t listen - I DON’T DO COMPUTER REPAIR ANY MORE!

Updated flitting on fiction again today …. Today.com pays $1/day for your first (100+ word) blogpost … plus extra for traffic you generate, also. Makes it jump to the top of the list when it comes to priorities, anyway! I’m really glad that Stephanie told me about it… it is good motivation for me.
← ← that would be my referral link … just in case anyone is interested. There is an application required – and they’re really looking for niche bloggers, not for “all about me” sort of stuff… but for some of you, it might well be a good opportunity.

I have also signed up for EntreCard, which is a way of generating traffic to your blog… you drop your card on blogs you visit; other people drop cards on yours…. and it all earns credits that can be used to buy ads on other people’s blogs. I’m quite surprised by how quickly I saw a rise in my traffic stats – and in how many people have already signed up to advertise on my blog! – all of which has helped me to earn enough credits that I can ‘afford’ to advertise my own on other blogs.

That’s what I came up with all by my lonesome for my blog ad on EntreCard …. I’m pretty pleased with it. Not bad for being graphically challenged, is it?  (Don’t tell me if it sucks, I don’t want to know!)

Anyway …I don’t expect that I’ll spend much time worrying about Entrecard… but it makes sense to me to click on the Drop thing when I see them :)

Kid is doing okay…she and her sister have gone to the zoo… last I heard, my sister was going to drive them there, and Mandy was going with. Glad they’re having fun …but I sure will feel a lot less stressed when both kids get JOBS…. I can’t afford to pay their rent for them…and all the fairy godmothers seem to have gone missing…. neither kid seems nearly as stressed by the whole lack of job thing as I am… or as I’d like them to be, actually …  I guess that’s normal…but it sure is frustrating!

Jess’ birthday is in a couple of days…will have to find some pictures and do a photoessay for her too, I guess, since I did one for Tamara. Do they ever outgrow the whole you like her better thing?

Haven’t made much progress on my psychology essay… need to DO IT! Would help if I could focus in on a topic. There are SO many areas that I’m interested in that I’m having trouble picking just one. The prof is on vacation for two weeks now – my goal is to have it submitted so that it’s there by the time she gets back.

Getting totally frustrated with the Registrars’ Office at Trent… faxed them my marriage license as requested re: my name change on July 30 – and have called them every 3 days or so since. Every time, they tell me it will “take a few days” and then, of course, it doesn’t happen. It wouldn’t matter as much but for the fact that email addresses are based on your name – and the Graduate Studies office is waiting for me to get mine fixed and IT won’t change it until it’s done in the system.

Just had a thought, actually – sent an email to IT asking if they could just tell me what it WILL be now… at least that way I could quit holding things up at the paper generation stage, even though it wouldn’t work until the Registrar’s Office person actually makes the change.

So annoying!

I’m also still extremely annoyed with NorDon – still haven’t received my income tax refund which they wrongly scooped and are supposed to have sent back. They are SO obnoxious – and incompetent. It is my money – and I want it. And bluddy hell! I just realized that I have yet to respond to the Revenue Canada audit thing, also …. I did print off all the tuition receipts they need – but I don’t think that counts unless & until I mail them. My bad.

I’m less annoyed – but still, becoming very impatient – with Dell ….I’ve ordered my new purdy purple laptop – and they have this nifty check your order status thing and even though it’s now 2 days past the estimated delivery date, I’ve yet to get a “your order has shipped” email … nor have they changed the nifty check your order status page to give me a new date to look forward to. ME WANT!!!! NOW!!!!

Anyway …I could go on and on ….but this is already past long enough…so I shall quit procrastinating and get on with doing something productive. Or something.

BLUDDY HELL Part 2

So … it is Sunday …and on Sundays, Ross goes to the store and flit gets to stay at home and do whatever flit wants to do with her 4 hours of me time.

In theory!

Was off to a great start…  had breakfast with Ross and then he went off to have a bath so I was able to start on my To Do list even earlier than I’d counted on. HA! Way to lull me into believing I was actually going to have a nice productive afternoon!

He took too long in the tub…. decided he didn’t have time to walk or ride his bike so I should drive him.

Yes, there are 2 vehicles in my driveway, as a matter of fact – the car, plus as of Friday, his company truck…and yes, he is quite capable of driving …but then he would have a vehicle there and wouldn’t get to walk home and that would never do. Whatever… it only takes a few minutes; no big deal.

Except that when we got there there were already people there…and one of them…someone that used to claim to be a friend deserving of breaks on late charges and movie purchases and so on and so on ….  Ross is too nice. Anyway … this guy was there already and he was STEAMED.

Imagine the NERVE of us only being open during the hours posted on the window! He had empties – and he has been by the store 3 times in the last week to drop them off and we weren’t open even ONCE!!!!  And today, we didn’t get there until NOON!!!

Apparently, the posted hours have no meaning to this ~gentleman~  …he was there early, so we should have been also.

Anyway …. by the time he finished his tantrum and left with his kid (nice outing with Daddy, eh?) … Ross had discovered a lack of cash in the drawer….  to pay people for their empties requires a seemingly endless supply of $5 bills …. so I had to come back and pick up the stash from the drawer where we’d left it, and then go back.

Finally got back home and started working on flitting On Fiction - posted a new article, and also my paper re: Anthem of a Reluctant Prophet … and then the aggravations all started piling up again.

I DO NOT FIX COMPUTERS ANY MORE. Honest! I’m sure you read Bluddy Hell!!!! (Part 1) , right? YOU know that I do not fix the damn things any more.

My past clients, however, remain unconvinced.

One called me on Friday and told me of his woes. I told him that I don’t DO this crap any more.

But….  walked him through the process of trying a System Restore anyway.

It didn’t work – and the computer was dropped off at the store for me yesterday *sigh*

He drove 40 minutes to bring it to me – left it with Sue …. so I ended up bringing it home even though I DO NOT FIX COMPUTERS ANYMORE DAMNIT!

So… the computer was sitting here behind me on the floor but I was not at all motivated to do anything about it … figured I’d leave it until I got motivated…which would, of course, have never happened cuz I DO NOT DO COMPUTER REPAIRS ANY MORE….

but he called and somehow I ended up saying that I would at least look at it this afternoon so I got off my arse and set it all up and then when I went to find the superduper long network cable I need to use to plug it into the Internet because I DO NOT FIX COMPUTERS ANY MORE so I no longer have a workshop all set up with cable already in place, I couldn’t find the darn superduper long network cable.

So I ended up ripping things apart looking for it and becoming increasingly frustrated. Eventually found it out in the garage where Ross had moved the box of computer stuff that I don’t need anymore because I DON’T DO COMPUTER REPAIRS ANY MORE but that I still have….  plugged it in and sure enough the damn thing claimed to have Internet access but nothing worked… gotta hate it when that happens.

So – since I have run into Microsoft’s oh so charming winsock error a time or twenty before, I knew what I needed to download to fix it …. so I came back to MY computer and plugged in my new flash key and started downloading stuff and while I was doing that I typed a big long rant very similar to this big long rant in an article on Gather.

DANGER Zone

DANGER Zone

And I KNOW better than to trust that Gather won’t disappear my articles … it does it regularly, especially since the PTB decided that rather than the Articles For Me page that actually WORKED and allowed us to easily get to all of the articles posted by our connections they would give us this bleepety bleep HAWTHORNE monster who would FEED us the articles (sans comment counts) that HAWTHORNE decided we should eat ….  apparently keeping us all FED requires that HAWTHORNE first EAT WHATEVER FRICKEN ARTICLES he wants.

Anyway …I KNOW better ….and I usually do remember to copy my text before I do anything silly like hit the Save As Draft button or add a picture or post the damn things… but I was cranky and distracted by the downloads and I forgot…so of COURSE Hawthorne decided to pick that moment to be hungry and to eat my big long rant. A$$hole that he is.  And yes, I tried the BACK button …don’t know why … it never works when  need it to work.

So – after  I posted an article on Gather - threatening to BITE anyone that mentioned the BACK button thing ….   I went and actually fixed the computer – easy fix… ran winsock error fix and Glary Utilities and called the guy to come get it…

Went to the fridge to get a drink and just had to laugh. Hysterically.

Unfortunately, my camera chose that moment to decide it didn’t have enough juice to take pictures …. if it hadn’t you would have been treated to pictures of my escapees.

When I was at the store the first time earlier today, I’d picked up a container of worms…which Scrooge had stepped on when the flew from the dash where I’d set them onto ‘his’ seat…. had grabbed them…but not checked well enough to make sure the lid was fully closed, I guess. When I opened the refrigerator there were worms EVERYWHERE… in the space between the mesh and my nectarine basket thingie, in 2 of the 3 drawers, on the bottom tray …. damn … now that I think of it, I should probably pull out the bottom drawers and make sure there aren’t any hiding under there… that’s likely where the stray I found crawling across my kitchen floor came from.

I DO NOT DO COMPUTER REPAIRS ANY MORE!!!

I DO NOT DO COMPUTER REPAIRS ANY MORE!!!

I am having SUCH a good day!

Oh, and Mr. P just came for his computer – gave me a $10 tip…and THEN said he wanted me to fix another computer … he forgot to grab it today and “there’s no rush for that one” … he’ll bring it on Wednesday. BLUDDY HELL!!!!

How many blogs do you need?

That was the question my darling daughter asked me a little while ago when I suggested that she might like to bookmark my newest blog, flittingOnFiction, which I created on Today.com just today.

I told her that I thought that I was done now :) At least for the time being.

Used to be that Gather was enough for me… but then they ICED it…and that seriously irks me.

So this one became my go on about whatever is going on in my life spot … I’m still at Gather… but I no longer feel inclined to be ONLY on Gather… that doesn’t work for me any more. Even if they were to fix everything they’ve broken, the many great people they’ve chased away are unlikely to return. Gather makes me sad.

I’ve tried Helium -  not terribly impressed with them… as Stephanie has discovered, once you post something there they OWN it… no process to EVER remove it again… that doesn’t work for me at all… and I detest their rating system, also ….absolutely detest it. They provide you with the articles they want you to read – in pairs. About topics they choose. ‘Fraid I don’t have the attention span to be reading stuff not of my choosing. Unless it’s on the test – then I will read it… but just because …. ? Uh… no. That is SO not happening. Some of the articles I’ve posted over there seem to be moving up quite nicely ….and I’ve earned a whole .09 cents… but I think that’s enough of that little experiment.

So … this one for general flitting…and ranting….and flittingOnFiction for my academic research ~stuff~ … my intention with that one is to focus on issues relating to the topics I’m researching & working on re: my graduate studies….and I’m hoping the fact that they pay for daily posts over there will help me to make the effort to come up with something to post every day. Can’t hurt, right?

More Friday flitting

I want my refund back!!!!

I want my refund back!!!!

Good: brown envelope from Revenue Canada in the mail today.

Since they owe me almost $1,000 because they sent it to the totally incompetent and lacking in ethics, morals, or intelligence people at Nordon Collections. The totally incompetent people at Nordon know that I owe them NOT ONE BLASTED CENT and that they are REQUIRED to send it back so that it can then be processed again and sent on to me – but hey… if they were totally incompetent at collections – even when I was begging to be ALLOWED to pay them (money I should never have owed and would not have owed had it not been for other incompetents at OSAP)  - why would anyone think they’d be in any hurry to return my money?

Bad: of course, it was not my cheque. It was a notice that I’ve been pulled for a random audit. Funny, it don’t feel random.

Good: the only deductions I claim are for tuition & educational expenses – so the audit should be fairly easy. Our accountant is away, or I’d have him deal with them – but it should be fairly straightforward, anyway.

Bad: Because I never do things the normal way, it’s not just a matter of pulling one tuition receipt – there are three (Laurentian @ Barrie, Laurentian @ Sudbury, & Athabasca U.) Sue & Ross were giving me a hard time suggesting that I would have trouble going through all my  papers and finding all the receipts.

Good: HA! While that WOULD be true if any of them where paper – they’re all done electronically now…so ain’t no paper required…. got them all in pdfs on my computer. I admittedly SUCK at paper …but I am pretty darn skilled at computers & I have them all. Aren’t I a clever birdie?

Bad: Did I mention that I want my cheque? I do! I do! I do want my money! *POUT*

Friday flitting

Our front yard - soon to have a tin boat out at the dock again!

Our front yard - soon to have a tin boat out at the dock again!

Oh, I am just loving Diane, Ross’ ex-wife, right now.

She called a little while ago – with a “problem”. Someone has offered her a free 12′ aluminium boat and she needs a place to keep it.

We had  one – but ended up giving it to one of Ross’ sisters & her hubby. They say we can go down and use it whenever… but we never have – and I wouldn’t ever be likely to, either. But I have SO missed it.

Diane’s having it brought here tomorrow …. and we can use it any time we want …I told her that we’d supply an electric motor for it … that way we can take the babies out … don’t have to worry about managing them and having to row at the same time.

It’s going to be a great weekend!

Which reminds me … we have a gift certificate re: going to a play and I was going to see if there are still seats available for this weekend… need to find that and call them.

Suddenly I feel far more motivated to get my stuff done …. got to get things done so I can go fishing!!!

Bluddy HELL!!!

The next time someone asks me to fix a computer for them, remind me to RUN SCREAMING!!!!!!!!!

I used to do it all the time. For money.

Used to be good at it, even – hardware, software, what-the-hell-ever.

Obviously, used to be is the key phrase.

I am SO FRUSTRATED.

Ross is home – waiting for his buddy Don to pick him up to do another buggy job…. but he’s gone outside to avoid having to deal with me.

I THOUGHT it was likely to be just a power supply that needed replacing. Easy $40 – and I’d be saving the nice lady a hassle… yay me. Idiot me, more like.Tried one I had on hand – can’t find tester, so not sure it was good. Clean though, so it should work. No joy. Made trip to South end of Barrie to pick up a new power supply.  THIS one is known to work.

But of course not.

No such luck. When the power supply went, it took the motherboard out with it.

So fine – I didn’t LIKE it but whatever… talked to customer. Yes, she wanted new motherboard and for me to put it in. Wrong answer.

Another trip to the South end. Buy new motherboard. Have geek guy check cpu and RAM – they’re both fine. Buy more RAM for her anyway – WHO USES 256 anymore? Well – little old ladies – but still… it was under the price I quoted – might as well do it.

Came home, installed new mobo, cpu & RAM.

Power supply? Still dead of course. Replaced it. Plugged everything in.

Uh… would be nice if the power supply waited for me to push the button before it turned on. And turned off when I pushed button again. No such luck. And nothing on monitor either.

Using old monitor – maybe it’s given up the ghost. Or maybe there is a short between board and case – it happens. And given the funky turning on all by itself and off not at all, seems likely.

Rip the board out and try it again.

Now power issues seem better. Still nothing on monitor though. Charming.

*sigh*  Accept defeat and yank my own computer apart and plug monitor into hers. Video – woo hoo.

Now – about that mouse?

No mouse.

Whatever – will deal with that later.

Boots to Norton GoBack and throws a fit – date & time are wrong OMG THE WORLD WILL END. Yeah ok…so let me in to fix it. NO.

Eventually manage to get into BIOS settings and set the damn date & time. Yay me.

Now we’re rolling …. albeit it still sans mouse.

Boot computer. Right to the Windows XP activation screen.

That activation key is no good.

What the HELL????

IT IS SO.

Nope. It is not.

Who knew that eMachines, like Dell, have decided (probably with Microsoft) to not allow reactivation of their PERFECTLY LEGAL OEM activation keys if/when one must change the hardware.

Who knew that eMachines (and apparently Dell? Will be checking THAT out in a hurry since that’s where my laptop is coming from and I specifically asked about the software) – had decided to rip of nice little old ladies who paid for a perfectly legal copy of OEM software that they would like to continue to use on their perfectly legal computer that they PAID FOR????

Try to get a real person at Microsoft. Used to be able to – was that cuz back then I knew how? or did they make it harder. I suspect the latter. Whatever… screaming mad by this point.

Try to use eMachines chat/help thing… no joy. It wants the serial number that is on the sticker on the back of the computer. THAT IS WHAT I WAS TYPING IN THE CORRECT DAMN SPACE – but it won’t take it. Try with the letters, without the letters, with the spaces, without the spaces, etc….  swear copiously.

Call eMachines ~help~ number. Real person answers phone. Like as in almost right away. I’m thinking good things about eMachines … imagine – real telephone support!!!!

~help~ guy asks for serial number. *sigh* … the one from the sticker on the … yeah, whatever… give him the number; he tells me the model number. We’re all good now… right?

NOT. ~help~ guy thinks it is perfectly reasonable to explain the eMachines solution to the problem. I should run right out and buy a new copy of Windows.

Excuse me?

She’s already paid for a perfectly legal copy of Windows XP which she wishes to continue using on the exact same computer and his ~solution~ is that she should go pay for a new one?

Not helpful.

I get that they don’t want their OEM software going onto other computers… but if one of their computers breaks down and needs some hardware replaced…. that is SO MUCH BULLSHIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

unF***INGBelievable!

At LEAST on the DELL site there is help info re: how to preserve your Activation Key if required – not that that would have likely helped in this case, as I would not have been able to do it after the motherboard died – but there is some acknowledgement that they are creating a problem.

eMachines just doesn’t seem to give a damn.

What a crock!

Anyway … her computer is up and running… although it broked her AVG and AVG is no longer really free and doesn’t THAT just suck too!? I am sad about that… have been using it – and recommending it – for years.

NO MORE COMPUTER REPAIRS for me. Well…aside from my own, and my kids’, and I promised the guy at the liquor store … bluddy HELL!!!!!

morning flit

So…I’m up already … have a class this morning, sort of – but not really. Most of my students from both sections have already submitted their final work. I only need to go in case any who haven’t are having difficulty with the assignment and show up for help. Unlikely. But if they do, I shall be there, at least for the first bit.

It frustrates me that some students did not bother to even show up for the Access portion of the course – they are students who had earned enough marks to pass in the first sections – so didn’t feel the ‘needed’ to continue attending. I have no control of the marking scheme for the course – that is set out for us, and we have to follow the course outline. Why bother paying for instruction at all if you’re not going to bother showing up and at least attempting to learn what you’re paying for? Makes no sense to me… nor does throwing away 25% of your mark.

Anyway, after I go be available for those who likely will not bother, Tamara & I will run a couple of errands – I need a new motherboard for a customer’s computer (damnit all to hell! It was supposed to be a simple power supply replacement – that was the only reason I said I’d do it) …and then we’re heading to Brampton. Mandy, my niece, plays soccer, and I haven’t yet been to a game this summer – time to change that. Tamara is staying in Brampton – she’s going to clean her sister’s room for her (don’t ask; I stay out of it) and then on Thursday they are going to Wonderland.

I emailed Dr. Oatley yesterday, and received a response which included a copy of the article that the newpaper reporter had used to write that article; that was helpful. Saved me from having to hunt it up at the library – had already looked online and found it there, but an online subscription to read it would have cost me $64. Since New Scientist, while interesting, is not something I particularly want to subscribe to, I was glad of that. I did also find the journal article in my online academic journals and have downloaded and read that, of course… but it was nice to have the interim step, as well. His email also included a link to his blog, OnFiction … lots more reading for me there.

Still haven’t determined a clear topic statement for my psychology paper – the prof for that course seems somewhat less enthusiastic about the potential benefits of fiction than I am – although, since it’s a correspondence course, I’m basing that on just a couple of emails. I think that I’m fussing about it way too much because of those emails… need to just settle on what I want to do and do it!

Fiction & Social Intelligence

Too exciting!  I was reading my Sunday paper yesterday morning and came across an article about some research being done at University of Toronto.  It is being led by Dr. Keith Oatley, a psychologist at the U of Toronto – one of the schools that accepted me into their MA program, but not, of course, the one I accepted.

That’s is not the exciting part – that’s rather a drag -  I have no doubt that Trent is the right place for me … but had I run across Dr. Oatley’s work sooner…

Anyway …. the article in the paper was about reading fiction & social intelligence; i.e. that “reading fiction appears to stimulate parts of the brain that govern empathy” so, as the headline says Read Fiction, Be Smarter. Since then, I’ve been through a whole bunch of online journals and found a whole lot of Oatley’s articles…I can’t wait to read them all more thoroughly – but certainly what I’ve skimmed so far is fascinating stuff that relates closely with my research interests.

I am going to get kid to print out the articles for me today while I’m at the college (teaching) … easier to read them on paper than on screen …   Hopefully find a clear topic to explore further for MY psychology paper (want to get it done this week) …and also, once I’ve read it all, will email him… hopefully make a connection there. Part of what I need to do in gearing up to apply for PhD programs is to further gel my directions – and to make connections with people with similar interests… can’t hurt to try, right?
